So, what’s the best time of year for family photos in the Hudson Valley? Fall is the most popular because of the foliage, but that doesn’t necessarily make it the best season for every family. Summer gives you long evenings and more flexibility, winter is great for cozy documentary sessions, and spring can be beautiful for families who don’t mind a little unpredictability. After photographing families throughout the area, I’ve found the best season really depends on your kids, the kind of photos you want, and how you want your session to feel.
The answer really depends on what you’re hoping to capture and what your family’s life actually looks like right now. Every season in the Hudson Valley brings something different to a session, and the right one comes down to your goals and your family, not the calendar. Keep reading to learn what I love about each season so that you can decide what speaks most to you and best matches your vision for both the feeling of the session, and of the photos themselves. After photographing families throughout the Hudson Valley, here’s what I’ve noticed about each season.

Fall Family Photos in the Hudson Valley: Great for Traditional or Candid Sessions
Mid-September through mid-October is when many families tend to book, for good reason. The fall foliage and the golden light is stunning and fleeting, and everyone wants to capture it. There is a feeling of being on track towards the holidays, and family updates and holiday cards are on everyone’s radar. Plus, a family photo session can be a fun fall outing for the family. The Hudson Valley starts turning color by late September, and by mid to late October whole hillsides are gold and rust. You don’t need peak foliage to get beautiful photos. If a family tells me they just want a few great photos for their holiday card, and want it done quickly, I usually recommend a Fall session.

Winter Family Photos: Best for Cozy, Candid Documentary Sessions
Winter gets skipped more than any other season when it comes to family photos, and it’s a missed opportunity for those families who love candid images. Along with early spring, it’s actually one of my favorite times to do family photos. There is a different energy to these inward seasons, a feeling of hibernation, reflection, and connection. The only sessions I don’t recommend for winter are Short & Sweet sessions, which are lightly guided and geared toward more traditional portraits. For true documentary sessions, winter is the best time of year. Short days mean we can fit more of your actual day into a shorter stretch of time, pajamas to pajamas.

Spring Family Photos in the Hudson Valley: Great for Families Ready to Get Outside
Spring sessions catch a particular kind of energy. Everything is waking up, the mud is back and so are kids who’ve been cooped up all winter finally running around outside again. It’s not as polished as fall. We are all emerging. Early spring can still run cold and unpredictable, so it tends to suit a fuller documentary session, although late spring is perfect for any kind of session.

Summer Family Photos: Perfect for Childhood and Extended Family Gatherings
Summer gives the most flexibility of any season. Kids are out of school, which often means less rush and more expansiveness. There is a freedom that shows up in summer sessions that is unique to summer. Summer also tends to capture a family at its most unguarded, everyone’s already outside and already a little sun-worn. Summer is often the one stretch of the year when extended family actually ends up in the same place at the same time, a family reunion, a lake week, everyone home for a wedding. Those gatherings don’t happen often, and they don’t happen twice, so it’s worth having real photos from them instead of a few phone shots that get lost in a camera roll. With more daylight to work with and everyone already relaxed and together, it’s an easy season to capture that kind of documentary moment without much extra planning.
Ultimately, It Comes Down to Your Family, Not the Calendar
There is no wrong season for family photos; picking the right season depends on your family’s needs and vibe. A newborn arriving in February doesn’t need to wait until October for the foliage. A family who wants a fast, easy summer session doesn’t need to force a sweater-weather booking just because that’s the expected photo. And a family who wants something slower and more immersive might find winter or early spring gives them exactly that.
