“Rebecca was there but not there — calm, unobtrusive, and somehow she managed to capture our family exactly as we are. For once, I actually love the photos of myself.”

— Ali, a mom of three littles who wanted family photos without the pressure of posing.

That’s why I love what I do—photographing families in and around New York who want to be witnessed, not posed.

Most families plan to set aside about two hours for a documentary session so there’s space for things to unfold naturally.  In reality, sessions often wrap up sooner. Sometimes everything we need happens within about an hour, while other times we use the full window depending on what the day looks like for your family.  For families who prefer something shorter and more guided, I also offer portrait sessions designed to be quick and simple.

Documentary family photography is about observing real life rather than staging it. Instead of asking everyone to perform for the camera, I photograph the interactions that are already happening — kids playing, parents helping with everyday routines, or a family spending time together at home.  New York family photography sessions often take place where families naturally spend time: at home, in the yard, or during a simple outing together.

While documentary photography is the foundation of my work, I also love working with families who prefer something shorter and more guided . During documentary sessions, I focus on the way your family naturally interacts rather than directing a series of poses.  That said, I do offer portrait-style sessions for families who want something simple and quick, with a little direction and a shorter time commitment.
If you’re not sure which approach is the right fit, I’m always happy to help you figure that out!
